San Juan de Ortega to Burgos......final journey

This is the last Stage of our journey on the Camino this time. Twenty six kilometres......but in the end my Fitbit said it was 35 kilometres.

Karen and Sara both from the Netherlands. Funny, funny gals. Karen on the left rolled over on her ankle and Alexa had an amazing cream we bought in Spain for pain. A topical ointment. Karen loved it so much, that she was going to snatch it from Alexa. She actually planned on purchasing some the next day. They were our bunk mates for one night in San Juan de Ortega.

Because we are travelling down a mountain (1000 meters) we decided it would be safer in the light. It is now about 0750 and we are heading out.

Stunning sunrises along the Camino.....and this one is exquisite.

The Covid 19 pandemic is still quite prevalent in Spain. Mandatory masks everywhere......and many wear them outside too.
I’m very glad for it.

First stop is a wee village named Ages, where we had second breakfast.

Still finding ancient bridges.

A stone circle on our journey today.

We will be happy to get off  this highway. Hardly any of our journey required us to walk along the highway, Only a couple of times.

The photos don’t actually do Justice to the elevation we’ve just climbed.

So grateful for this extraordinary adventure and time with my amazing daughter, Alexa. She has such strength and fortitude that I’m not sure she knew.

Our terrain for about a kilometre.....not pleasant underfoot. Thank God for poles.

Seriously?????  Like walking on the moon.

Another tribute cross to pilgrims.  Alexa was very moved by this one.

The view and Way ahead.

How can they stack these hay piles soooooo high?

We have finally arrived at the outskirts of Burgos.  We stopped at the very first cafe we found for water and wine.
I spotted a storks nest on top of this chapel.  We saw four huge storks nests on the Way....but no sightings of storks..

The path into Burgos could be done either through industrial areas and suburbs or along the river. A lovely man stopped us at the cafe to tell us to go the river way. How sweet. Such incredibly kind people the Spaniards.

About 10 kilometres of river path before we arrived near the cathedral.

We saw two Praying Mantis. These fellows are about four inches long.....I blame the pesticides 🤣.

As we got closer to the cathedral, we were welcomed by two hostel mates, Bart and Brooke from The Netherlands. They had arrived about a hour ahead. How lovely for our arrival in this amazing city.

Twenty-six kilometres......eight hours.......a journey that begin over 11 days ago on the Camino.....we have completed the segment of the Camino we said we would.....Pamplona to Burgos.....over 157 kilometres.
“If it were easy.....everyone would do it.” Alexa was a ROCKSTAR.

The Burgos Cathedral is so massive, I can’t get a photo of it in one shot.  Construction started in the 12th century of this Catholic Church.
It’s official name is Santa Iglesia Catedral Basilica Metropolitana de Santa Maria de Burgos.

We are only in Burgos for a few hours and we have to locate our knapsacks that we’re delivered and catch a train for our next respite along the Way.  So visiting Burgos will have to wait for our next time.
Off to Santiago de Compostela.....the ultimate goal of every peregrino.
