It was pretty darn pitch black when we headed out of Najera to begin our trek to Santo Domingo de Calzada.
If fact we came upon a women, Bridget from Switzerland who was nervous to go any farther by herself. We invited her to join us. Flashlights on our phones for about an hour......and then......
....the skies began to turn pink.....blue and red.
......and yellow.
It’s a incredible feeling to see that sunrise of a new day.....on the Camino that people have pilgrimaged for a millennium. I am humbled by it.
The mountains in the distance can’t be ignored.
A few times we would prepared and head out planning to go to the first cafe along the Way. Many of our journeys were dotted with tiny villages.
And more villages.....
We placed a stone that Deb gave us to lay along the Camino. We chose this spot.....I’ll be honest I don’t know the entire significance but many were putting their stones there. I believe it is a pilgrim memorial.
Did I mention the incredible clouds?
Markers come in all forms. Even stone arrows on the Way.
So many slugs......and they are huge. Approximately 4 inches long! I try not to step on them.
I can not get enough of these vast vineyards.
Not always able to find a rest spot when you need it. Hard to get up from the ground.....so we keep heading out until we find something.
And we did. At this rest area we met Sara, Bart and Brooke from the Netherlands.
And check out the size of this pinecone!
The plains......very different from our olive orchards and vineyards.
Yiiiiiiiipppppppeeeeeee......there is Santo Domingo de Calzada.
Poor Alexa is so tired she can’t reach her Cervecas.......beer.
The view from our upscale hostel. Right in the Old Town. Time for a nap....then going out for dinner.
Roasted peppers for sure.....and lamb and fries.
Beans soup with clams. Sounds odd but Alexa loved it. Delicious.
A popular plaza for peregrinos.
The Santo Domingo de Calzada Cathedral. Stunning at evening.
Next we are walking to Belorado.
